What is ILM Level 5? A practical guide to 8725
ILM Level 5 is the 8725 operational leadership and management suite. This guide covers who it is for, pathway sizes, unit choices, portfolio assessment, time, cost and progression.

ILM Level 5 is often described in short phrases — "ILM 5", "the ILM Level 5 Diploma" or "a management qualification" — but the current offer is a suite with several pathway sizes. This guide explains what it is before you compare prices or choose units.
The short answer
ILM Level 5 is the current City & Guilds 8725 suite in Operational Leadership and Management Skills, delivered under the ILM banner as ILM Level 5 Leadership and Management. It is for operational and middle managers, department heads and experienced leaders with wider responsibility.
It is assessed through a portfolio of workplace evidence. There are no exams and no written assignments. You choose an Award, Certificate, Diploma or Extended Diploma, then complete the mandatory and optional unit requirements for that pathway.
Who is Level 5 for?
ILM Level 5 is aimed at operational and middle managers, department heads and experienced leaders developing strategic insight and practical management expertise. In practical terms, it fits roles where your evidence can include more than individual or team-level activity: operational planning, change, risk, finance, resources, stakeholders or wider organisational responsibility.
The important test is not your job title. It is whether your current role gives you genuine opportunities to lead and manage at this level. All evidence for the skills learning outcomes must be generated in the workplace or a realistic working environment, and must be valid and attributable to you. If your evidence is mainly first-line or team leadership, compare ILM Level 3 before choosing Level 5.
The four Level 5 pathways
All four pathways sit in the same 8725 suite. They differ mainly in volume: credits, guided learning hours, total qualification time and the number of units you need to evidence.
| Pathway | Code | GLH | TQT | Credits | Typical duration | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Award | 8725-11 | 40 | 80 | 8 | ~3 months | £695 |
| Certificate | 8725-21 | 80 | 160 | 16 | ~6 months | £1,149 |
| Diploma | 8725-31 | 175 | 390 | 39 | ~12 months | £1,595 |
| Extended Diploma | 8725-41 | 485 | 1180 | 118 | ~18 months | £1,895 |

How the units and pathways work
For the Award, Certificate and Diploma, Unit 501 Assessing own leadership performance is the mandatory starting unit. Each pathway then requires a different number of optional units:
- Award — Unit 501 plus at least one optional unit.
- Certificate — Unit 501 plus at least three optional units.
- Diploma — Unit 501 plus at least eight optional units.
- Extended Diploma — The specified extended-diploma mandatory unit set; additional optional units may be taken.
The extended pathway has its own specified mandatory set rather than simply being the Diploma with a few extra tasks. The qualification page lists the exact combination, and the units library gives each unit's title and content.
Common choices depend on the work you actually do. Examples include:
- Unit 503 Managing people for managing people.
- Unit 504 Leading people and organisational culture for leading people and organisational culture.
- Unit 505 Coaching and mentoring in a leadership role where coaching and mentoring is part of your leadership role.
- Unit 509 Project management where you manage projects.
- Unit 513 Managing business risk where business risk is part of your responsibility.
- Unit 515 Leading innovation and change where you lead innovation and change.
- Unit 520 Operational planning and reporting where operational planning and reporting is central.
- Unit 525 Managing stakeholder relationships where your evidence centres on stakeholder relationships.
These are examples, not a universal shopping list. Select units that match your role and the evidence you can produce. The Level 5 qualification page shows the pathway structures and available units.
How is Level 5 assessed?
Assessment is a portfolio of evidence, centre-devised and internally set and marked. There are no exams and no written assignments. All evidence for the skills learning outcomes must be generated in the workplace or a realistic working environment, and must be valid and attributable to you.
Evidence can include workplace documents and records, projects, reflective accounts, journals and logs, assessment observation, witness testimonies and video clips up to 15 minutes. Your centre assesses evidence against the criteria, and the portfolio must show what you did, why you did it, what happened and what you learned.
That makes Level 5 different from a knowledge test. You are not rewarded for repeating a model without context. You need to explain your own operational decisions and evaluate their effect. The portfolio of evidence guide explains the method in detail.
How long does it take?
Use total qualification time (TQT) as the planning figure, not just guided learning hours. The Award requires 80 hours, the Certificate 160, the Diploma 390 and the Extended Diploma 1180. Typical durations run from about 3 months to 18 months.
The actual calendar time depends on your role, evidence opportunities, pace and assessor workflow. Portfolio study works best when you gather evidence as activities happen instead of trying to reconstruct everything at the end.
How much does it cost?
At Leader Study Pro, the current Level 5 pathway prices are: £695 for the Award, £1,149 for the Certificate, £1,595 for the Diploma and £1,895 for the Extended Diploma. These are one-time individual enrolment prices inclusive of UK VAT. The how much does ILM cost guide explains what the total can include and why registration and certification may appear as separate lines in other quotes.
Price should be considered alongside fit. A smaller pathway may be the right outcome if it covers the evidence and development you need. A larger pathway requires more units and more portfolio work, so it is not automatically better.
Is Level 5 equivalent to a degree?
ILM Level 5 sits at the same RQF level as a foundation degree, an HND or the second year of a bachelor's degree. It is therefore a degree-level qualification, but it is not a full bachelor's degree. A full bachelor's degree sits at Level 6.
Equivalent here means the level of demand, not that the qualifications are interchangeable. Read the Level 5 equivalence guide if that distinction matters for a job, promotion or further study decision.
Where does MIoL fit?
Registered ILM learners can access complimentary studying membership with The Institute of Leadership. After completion, The Institute currently states that Member membership can be supported by a Level 5 qualification or higher, subject to The Institute's criteria. Professional grades are applied for separately; completing Level 5 does not mean that you automatically hold MIoL.
