ILM online courses: how studying online actually works

Online delivery suits ILM leadership qualifications unusually well, and the reason is structural: because assessment is a portfolio of evidence from your own workplace, the important part of the qualification was always happening at work rather than in a classroom.

What "online" actually changes — and what it does not

What changes:

• The learning content is digital: unit materials, videos, activities, reading, worked examples
• You work at your own pace within the enrolment period, rather than to a class timetable
• Evidence is submitted through an ePortfolio rather than a ring binder
• Tutor and assessor contact happens by message, call or video rather than in a room
• Observations and professional discussions are conducted remotely where the activity allows

What does not change:

• The regulated qualification title on your certificate
• The assessment criteria — identical for every learner on the qualification
• The assessment method: Assessment is a portfolio of evidence, centre-devised and internally set and marked. There are no exams and no written assignments.
• All evidence for the skills learning outcomes must be generated in the workplace or a realistic working environment, and must be valid and attributable to you.
• Quality assurance: internal quality assurance by your centre, external quality assurance by City & Guilds
• Grading: pass/fail

There is no "online version" of the qualification. There is one qualification, delivered a different way.

How assessment works remotely

This is the part people are unsure about, so in sequence:

1. Induction by video call. You agree your units and map likely evidence to your current role. Do this properly — it usually shows that a good proportion of your evidence already exists.
2. Learning at your pace. Work through the unit material for the criteria you are targeting next.
3. Gather evidence at work. Workplace documents, reflective accounts, witness testimonies, and video clips up to 15 minutes.
4. Upload to the ePortfolio, mapping each piece to the criteria it addresses.
5. Assessor feedback. Written feedback identifying what is met and what is not yet sufficient. This is iterative and normal.
6. Remote observation or professional discussion by video call where needed — covered in observation and professional discussion.
7. Quality assurance and certification.

Two remote-specific advantages worth knowing. First, observing an online team meeting is often easier than an in-person visit — no travel, no scheduling around a site visit. Second, an ePortfolio makes criteria mapping visible, so you can see exactly what is outstanding instead of guessing.

What to check before you enrol anywhere

The questions that distinguish a good online provider from a cheap one:

1. Is it a regulated qualification with an awarding organisation and an RQF level? If a course does not name both, it is not a regulated qualification whatever the badge says.
2. How much assessor contact is included, and how quickly do they respond? This is the single biggest predictor of whether you finish. "Unlimited support" with a five-day response time is not the same as a named assessor who replies within 48 hours.
3. Is registration and certification included in the price? Ask explicitly.
4. How long do I have? Enrolment periods vary, and extensions may cost.
5. What happens if my evidence is not yet sufficient? Resubmission should be normal and free, not a charged resit.
6. Is the price per unit or for the whole qualification?
7. What ePortfolio system is used, and can I export my evidence at the end?
8. Do I need a management role? Yes, effectively — and a provider who does not tell you that is not being straight with you.

Does online study suit you?

It works well if you:

• Are currently managing or leading people, so evidence generates naturally
• Can protect a few hours a week reliably
• Prefer working at your own pace to sitting in a classroom
• Are comfortable writing and organising files
• Do not want to lose days to travel and venue attendance

It works less well if you:

• Rely on a fixed timetable and the presence of other people to keep going
• Are not currently in a role where you can lead and manage
• Would find the reflective writing very hard without face-to-face support
• Have no reliable place to store evidence securely

The honest failure mode of online study is not difficulty — it is drift. Someone enrols, does the first two units in a month, gets busy, and looks up nine months later having done nothing. The two things that prevent it are a named assessor who chases you and a fixed slot in your week that you defend.

Choosing your size and level

Online or not, the choice of level and size is the same decision:
